Weaving Echoes

Elizaveta Kovalenko. Temporal mandibular Join

The jaw is so clenched that no speech or sound can pass through. During rehabilitation, exercises are conducted in order to separate the two hard-pressed halves. At this point of separation the entire apparatus translates. This necessity of translation is to produce a further opening past that which can be accomplished. The sculptural forms which make up „Temporal mandibular Join“ are a series of separations in the process of rehabilitating into a unitive, supportive join. They are at once objects which refer back to structures invented to facilitate material creation while also playing on and relating to the anatomical support function of the jaw. Here, as a physical therapy occurs, the objects defy their former functions through inverting materialities and relationships, as this is the only way to imagine a new translation. In order to overcome certain institutional symptoms and conditions, „Temporal mandibular Join“ forms a hinge between Gerhard Marcks Haus and the collective self-organized space „From the A“, both located in Bremen’s Viertel district. One component of the work is relocated to a sign on the facade of the project space–– this gesture creates the potential for a collaborative relationship between the two sites as a symbiotic interplay where the institution does not impose its language upon the work, but both spaces offer support in translating.
